Central Carolina Tire, in Harnett County, North Carolina is one of the leading tire processing facilities on the East Coast, both from a volume standpoint and a technology standpoint. Garrett & Moore’s staff designed and permitted the currently active tire monofill landfill, and recently added the Rasper Process to the site operating permit. The Rasper Process is a state-of-the-art process that separates steel reinforcement from rubber in scrap heavy truck tires. Recovered steel is recycled, and the leftover rubber is ground into crumb rubber for use as playground mulch, athletic fields, tire-derived fuel, drainfield material, and numerous other uses. The Rasper Process as well as other recycling and recovery efforts at the facility keep approximately 60,000 tons of scrap tires annually out of the landfill.
